Usharal is an airport in Alakol District, Almaty Oblast, Kazakhstan, 5 km west of the town of Usharal. It was established in 1970 as a military airfield to support the garrison located at the Dzungarian Gate. Until the early 1990s it was called Uch-Aral.
The airfield is a class 1 airfield, capable of receiving Il-76, An-22, Tu-154 and lighter aircraft, as well as helicopters of all types.
The airfield is home to the 486th helicopter regiment of the Strategic Air Defense Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Mi-24, Mi-8 helicopters).
Until 1992, the 27th Fighter Aviation Regiment (MiG-21 aircraft), which was part of the 10th Fighter Aviation Division, was based at the airfield. It received regular civilian flights from Almaty (Yak-40 aircraft) and Taldy-Kurgan (with intermediate landings at airfields of local settlements, An-2 aircraft).
In 2015-2017, the airport runway was repaired, a new taxiway and apron for 2 aircraft, a new terminal building were built. On July 21, 2017, the airport began accepting civilian seasonal flights.
In 2018, thanks to the state subsidy program aimed at developing domestic tourism, Usharal started receiving direct flights from Almaty again. This simplified the routes from most cities in Kazakhstan to medical sanatoriums on the shores of the salty, drainless Lake Alakol, known for its healing properties.
