Thank you for this. A little story about OH-LPF and her misbehaviour one night at London Gatwick where I was the British Airways Gate Agent, at that time handling the "AY" codeshare flight for Helsinki.
On her way into us from Helsinki, OH-LPF had managed to lose a windshield wiper blade, so we called up the engineer. At the time, only Finnair operated the DC9/MD83 aircraft at Gatwick, so the engineer phoned Alitalia at Heathrow to see if they had a spare they could send in a van. No spares.
All 140 passengers had to be found overnight hotel accommodation at enormous cost while a replacement wiper blade, worth about £10 at the time, was flown with the first flight in from Helsinki the next morning.
As the engineer said, it would have been easy to fashion a new blade from the rubber of one of our DC10/MD11 aircraft by cutting it down to size, but without the CAA's "Type Approval", you daren't do anything like that. If the blade fell off again, and the pilot couldn't see because of a rain squall or insect squash and an accident resulted, the engineer who "tried to do everyone a favour" could face serious charges in court.
